چکیده

Abstract Introduction We determined whether slow wave sleep is associated with plasma levels of Aβ40, Aβ42, Aβ42/Aβ40, Tau, tau/Aβ42 and NfL this relationship differed between Blacks/African-Americans non-Hispanic Whites. Methods This was a cross-sectional analysis baseline data from 171 community-dwelling cognitively normal older-adults, participating in ongoing NYU studies on memory, aging. Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) (SWS) duration calculated 2 nights in-lab NPSGs. Plasma Tau were using single molecule array (SIMOA). Associations NREM SWS AD biomarker assessed adjusted generalized linear models Pearson correlation after normalization. Analyses for age, sex, BMI, race, education. Results Of the subjects (128 Whites 43 Blacks/African-Americans), 112 (65.5%) females, mean (SD) age 68.6 (6.6) years, BMI 27.6 (6.1) kg/m**2, education 16.9 (2.1). There no racial differences AHI4%. Compared to Whites, had significantly lower years (14.2 vs. 17.2, p <.01), Aβ40 (248.3 262.5 pg/ml) (11.4 15.2 p<.05 both. significant Tau/Aβ40 Tau/Aβ42 (p>.05 all). not or tau overall sample However, negatively correlated Aβ42 (r=-0.28, p<=0.05), (r=-0.087, p=0.72), though significant, (r=-0.153, p=0.27), significant. In Black/African-Americans, positively (r=0.48, p=0.05), (r=0.32, p=0.04), (r=0.52, p=0.04). tau/Aβ42, tau/Aβ40 across subgroups. Conclusion Race-specific divergent associations & may suggest SDOH factors mechanisms that could influence AD-risk older-adults. APOEε4 and slow wave sleep in older adults

Slow wave (or stage N3) sleep has been linked to a variety of cognitive processes. However, the role of stage N3 in the elderly is debated. The link between stage N3 and episodic memory may be weakened or changed in the older adult population, possibly due to several altered mechanisms impacting the cellular structure of the brain. The bases for the age-related dissociation between stage N3 and...

Gabapentin increases slow-wave sleep in normal adults.

PURPOSE The older antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) have a variety of effects on sleep, including marked reduction in rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, slow-wave sleep (SWS), and sleep latency, and an increase in light sleep. The effects of the newer AEDs on sleep are unknown. Our purpose was to study the effect of gabapentin (GBP) on sleep. METHODS Ten healthy adults and nine controls were the subjec...

Exercise and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in cognitively normal older adults.

OBJECTIVE In addition to the increasingly recognized role of physical exercise in maintaining cognition, exercise may influence Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, as transgenic mouse studies show lowered levels of AD pathology in exercise groups. The objective of this study was to elucidate the association between exercise and AD pathology in humans using Pittsburgh compound-B (PIB), amyloid-b...

Reciprocal Associations between Depressive Symptoms and Mastery among Older Adults; Black-White Differences

Purpose: Although higher levels of depressive symptoms and lower levels of sense of mastery tend to be comorbid, limited information exists on racial differences in the longitudinal associations between the two over time. The current study compared Black and White American older adults for the longitudinal links between depressive symptoms and mastery in the United States. Methods: Using data f...
